Kenneth Jessen photo collectionNotesPhotographer's note: "Valdez is 13 miles west of Trinidad and a mile east of Segundo. Colorado Fuel & Iron operated the large Frederick Mine at Valdez. By the time it closed in 1960, output from this single mine had reached an astounding 20 million tons. Most of the coal was shipped to the coke ovens at neighboring Segundo to be converted into coke. Valdez sits along the south side of the Purgatoire River. To reach the site from Colorado 12, cross the bridge and go over the tracks of the Colorado & Wyoming Railroad. The railroad depot has been restored and is now a private residence. A few new homes are mixed among occupied and abandoned original structures."DonorGift; Kenneth Jessen; 2020.
