Kenneth Jessen photo collectionNotesPhotographer's note: "Ramah is an occupied town, but with abandoned business buildings. Its name was selected from a Bible by the wife of a Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific official as she passed through the site. The railroad reached Ramah in 1888, and a town plat was filed the same year by Lem Gammon. There was already a homestead near the site dating back to 1872, that of William Liptrap and his family. Gammon, however, constructed the first businesses in Ramah including a grain elevator, hotel and store. The first school was constructed in 1889. The Ramah post office was preceded by the nearby O.Z. post office, which was in operation from 1877 to 1889. O.Z. was the brand for the Lem Gammon ranch, located about a mile to the southwest. After the railroad arrived, the post office was moved from O.Z. to Ramah."DonorGift; Kenneth Jessen; 2020.
