Photographer's note: "Along the dusty main street of Ludlow are the abandoned remains of several businesses, and to the south are a couple of abandoned frame homes. This is all that is left of Ludlow. Its post office opened in 1896 and remained open until 1954. Immediately prior to the strike, Ludlow had a population of 50, and its businesses included two meat markets, a dairy, book and stationery store, bakery, brewery, two grocery stores, livery barn, five saloons, blacksmith shop and boardinghouse. The abandoned town sits along a county road south of the memorial and north of County Road 40.2. Most of the site is fenced and posted. Had it not been the site of a massacre, which took place on April 20, 1914 during a bloody miner's strike, it would be just another deserted coal-mining town."DonorGift; Kenneth Jessen; 2020.
