Kenneth Jessen photo collectionNotesPhotographer's note: "The town of Earl, located northeast of Trinidad on U.S. 350 at County Road 48.0, was named for Earl Baker. It became a small farming and ranching village along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. Earl was established when the railroad constructed its depot in 1878. The town had a school, and in 1895, it got its own post office. Businesses included a general merchandise store and a garage. Ironically, Earl's decline started shortly after the town was platted in 1921. It was at its peak with 75 residents, and just two years later, the post office closed due to insufficient population. By 1929, most of the businesses had moved away, but the railroad maintained its depot until 1961. Today, all that is left is an old abandoned store sitting along the highway.
