Kenneth Jessen photo collectionNotesPhotographer's note: "In 1871, Damacio Lopez homesteaded in the area and joined this poor, close-knit community. Lopez is credited with building the Dolores Mission, a small chapel constructed from rock and adobe bricks up on a hillside above the river. A cemetery was established on the southeast side of the mission. The settlement came to an end with the flood of 1904, and the area was abandoned leaving the ruins of the mission, a few tombstones and a reported 300 foundations in the flood plain."DonorGift; Kenneth Jessen; 2020.
