Born-Digital or AnalogAnalogTranscriptPlace Names. Denver "The first settlement was Placer camp on the Platte, not far from Cherry Creek. It was established by the Russell Party, who started the original Pike's Peak rush. Next, a group appeared from Lawrence, Kansas, and laid out a town called Montana City, a mile from Placer camp. Still later the same group founded another village on the east side of Cherry Creek which they named St. Charles. Having done well as town builder the Lawrence men departed intending to return in the spring. Meanwhile, another battalion of seekers arrived, founded a village on the west bank of the creek and called it Auraria, consolidated with Denver in 1860.
