North Clear Creek is to the lower right side of the photograph. Gold was discovered in Gregory Gulch in the spring of 1859, and by the next year, Central City was an important supply and mining center for the surrounding districts with a population of approximately 6,000 people in the area. When Gilpin County was organized in 1861-62, Central City was designated as the county seat.
