The Opera House, opened in 1878, was constructed entirely of granite, except for the top and sides, and could seat seven hundred fifty people. Each year since 1930, with the exception of the war years, the stars of the opera, stage, and screen performed for capacity audiences. The 1938 season featured Victor Hugo's "Ruy Blas." This mid-summer evening shot shows dozens of patrons, dressed in formal evening attire, standing in front of the closed doors. A man in the center of the crown holds up and electric light and shines it on several people, possibly the cast of the play, as the patrons stand nearby and watch.Physical Description1 photoprint |27 x 34 cm (10 1/2 x 13 1/4 in.)Born-Digital or AnalogAnalogSubjectOpera houses--Colorado--Central CityCentral City Opera House.Geographic AreaCentral City (Colo.)CollectionPhotographs - Western HistoryRelated MaterialImage File: ZZR710002509Type of MaterialPhotographic printsNotesPrint has a bent and torn upper left corner and a an tear at the lower right corner.
