Behind these landmarks are the buildings along West Main Street and the hills that surround the town. Until the court house was built, much of Central City's business was conducted in Washington Hall on Lawrence Street. In 1897, voters authorized a bond issue for $30,000 to build the building, and the building was completed in 1900. The brick building was modeled after the Otero County Court House in LaJunta and had foundation walls two- to-three feet thick. The St. James congregation was organized in 1859, shortly after the founding of the town.Physical Description1 photonegative : black-and-white ; 11 x 7 cm (2 3/4 x 4 1/2 in.); 1 photoprint : black-and-white ; 6 x 12 cm (2 1/4 x 4 1/4 in.)Born-Digital or AnalogAnalogSubjectCourthouses--Colorado--Central CityMethodist churches--Colorado--Central CityGeographic AreaCentral City (Colo.)CollectionPhotographs - Western HistoryRelated MaterialImage File: ZZR710002581Type of MaterialFilm negativesBlack & white photographsPhotographic printsOriginal Material Found in CollectionWH906.
