The oldest school building, Central City School, sits to the right of St. Paul's Episcopal church on First High Street. The school was completed in 1870 and was used to all grades until 1881. In 1902, it became Central City high School. The Clark School (below on Lawrence Street) was built in 1901 for $20,000. Measuring sixty-four by eighty-five feet, the school is built of pressed brick with cut stone trimming and a hipped roof. The schools are surrounded by mostly clapboard and board-and-batten houses.
