The cathedral was built between 1869 and 1884 and was the first cathedral west of the Mississippi and north of Durango, Mexico. Its French Romanesque style was ordered by Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy, whose plans called for a 160-foot steeple on each tower. (The steeples were never built.) A large, round, stained-glass window stands between the two towers.
