The square, log building was built by Charles Fitchett, who helped survey the old Berthoud Pass wagon road to turn it into a highway. The building was built as a place for summer tourists to buy snacks and souvenirs, although skiers used it during the winter months as well. The |building was struck by lightning and dismantled in 1939. A sign reading: "60 miles to Denver Bureau of Public Roads" tops the post with another sign reading: "Top of Berthoud Pass Elevation 11,306 Feet." The post is next to a dirt road in the foreground. A metal waste bin stands next to the sign post. A small shelter covering a gas pump is in the midground. A sign on top of the shelter reads: "Highest Elev. Filling Station in the World - Powerine Gas - Power-Lube Motor |Oil - Elevation 11,306 Ft. Above the Sea." Three cars are parked in front of the inn.Physical Description1 copy photonegative |6 x 8 cm (2 1/4 x 3 in.)|1 photonegative : nitrate |9 x 11 cm (3 1/4 x 4 1/4 in.)|1 photoprint |15 x 19 cm (5 3/4 x 7 1/2 in.)SubjectBerthoud Pass (Colo.)Clear Creek County (Colo.)Grand County (Colo.)Automobiles--Colorado--Grand CountyGasoline pumps--Colorado--Grand CountyPasses (Landforms)--Colorado--Grand CountySki lodges--Colorado--Grand CountyTaverns (Inns)--Colorado--Grand CountyWomen--Colorado--Grand CountyGeographic AreaClear Creek County (Colo.)Related MaterialImage File: ZZR700120398Type of MaterialFilm negativesNitrate negativesPhotographic printsBlack & white photographsNotesTitle supplied by cataloger.
