Summary
Captain Anson Mills poses in front of a trophy tepee from the Slim Buttes battle in the southern Black Hills, Dakota Territory, with Lieutenant Colonel William B. Royall, Captain William H. Andrews, First Lieutenant Joseph Lawson, scout Frank Grouard, Private William J. McClinton, and Second Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka. The battle was the first victory during the Native American Sioux campaigns. It recaptured Custer's Seventh Cavalry guidon or flag to the U. S. Army; it shows displayed against the tepee.
