Retirement was induced directly by the disastrous defeat suffered by the Sioux braves led by Red cloud in the Wagon Box fight near Fort Phill Kearny, Aug 1867, the year after his warriors had wiped out Fetterman's force of 81 men in 30 minutes in the same area. About 30 white men killed more than 1100 Sioux braves in the Wagon Box Fight due to having repeating rifles for the first time, which the Indians did not know about."; R7100315626
