Spring, Cheyenne, Wyo. 1947.NotesTitle and "This building was erected at the Shoshone Indian Agency in 1871 for the protection of employees when the Agency was attacked by hostile Indians. There was a well of excellent water within the house, and it was always kept well stocked with provisions, guns and ammunition. There was a heavy layer of earth on the roof and portholes were in the walls, through which the defenders could fire upon their enemies. The building was practically fireproof against fire arrows, which the Indians used in attempts to set fire to it. To this refuge, the employees and their families would resort when the Agency was attacked, and they could withstand a long siege. The shingled roof and porch are later additions. The building is now used for oil storage. A. F. C. Greene- July 5, 1938" typed on back of print. R7100322746
