"In a point of wealth and population, Central City is the first mining city in Colorado. In fact, Central Black Hawk and Nevada may be classed as one, not only in interests, but in location, they forming a continuous settlement of over three miles in length. The mountains line their approaches, and surround them on all sides, in which are crowded prolific mines of unlimited wealth. In Black Hawk are located expensive smelting works there being nearly a score of stamp mills in constant operation; and no visitor to Colorado should fail to see Black Hawk and Central; its mines, mills and reduction works. The road to them passes through Clear Creek Canyon, which presents some of the most majestic scenery to be found in the Rocky Mountains. Altitude 8382 feet.
