Title	St. Mary's Catholic Church

Summary	View of the north side of St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church in Central City, Colorado. Formerly St. Patrick's, the original structure was damaged in the fire of 1874, and for almost twenty years the congregation worshipped in a roofed-over basement. The name of the church was changed in 1892, and the present building was finished in 1893. The old depot with the section house is to the left of the church across Pine Street. Nevada Street forks with Pine Street in the center of the image. In the foreground are two buidings. One has a hipped, shingled roof, and the other has a flat roof with six chimneys, one of which is emitting smoke.

Notes	Formerly F5859.; Hand-written on back of photoprint: Central City, Colo. Spring Street Early 1900's. 1. Old depot with section house at left. 2. Back of grandstand facing ballpark. 3. House of Morgan - large brick building 4. House of - fire of 1874 burned as far as a log house just below it. which was rolled down hill and burned there. 5. House of Sam Walters - was there at time of fire. 6. At time of fire this house was owned by a man who had insurance on it & the story is that he sat on the hill above and hoped that it would burn. The house next burned & the fire jumped it and burned the one on the other side then the Catholic church just beyond.; Photoprint has slightly bent and worn edges.; Title supplied by cataloger.; R7100025310.
