Flathead Chief Louison, a judge on the Flathead Indian Reservation court, poses on the reservation in western Montana. He wears a tall feather headdress, and his hair is in long braids. He holds a pipe tomahawk in his left arm. Long ermine fur tassles hang from his sleeves. Louison was known on the reservation for speaking out against the erosion of customs and traditions. He was also a participant in the U.S. Indian Congress in Omaha, October 1898.
