A man sits writing in a pithouse of Step House, a cliff dwelling in Mesa Verde National Park. The sides of the pithouse are lined with small slabs of sandstone. Additional portions of the cliff dwelling are being excavated behind where the man sits. Slabs of rock are scattered around the site. Step House was excavated in 1926 under the supervision of Jesse Nusbaum.
