Exterior view of the L.L. Nunn power station, Ames, San Miguel County, Colorado, shows a side gable structure with lean-to additions, board and batten construction and uneven board roofline. A large stack of lumber is piled in front of the power station below the Gold King mine. Nunn, a lawyer, was hired to represent the financially troubled mine that could not turn a profit due to high cost of fuel and 12,000 foot altitude. He came up with the idea to use the San Miquel River to power an electrical power plant. George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla were contracted to construct the world's first commercial transmissions of high-pressure electricity. The hydroelectric plant produced alternating current (AC) instead of direct current (DC).
