Rock walls at the State Penitentiary in Canon City, Colorado, enclose this facility. The backside is an earth embankment with an arch cut into it. Men sit on random drystacked wall, with a ladder below; others work in the enclosure behind them. Adjacent rusticated stone is smoke blackened above an oven door. An ashlar, flat roofed bunker with wooden doors and a false front has a sunken yard fronted by dirt road in the foreground. Shovels, wheelbarrows, and barrels are throughout.
