Portrait of a youth and his guardian, Leadville, Colorado
In this studio portrait of a young man standing with a seated older man in Leadville, Colorado, both men wear coats, vests and hats. Both smoke cigars and have tucked their trouser legs inside their boots. The younger man wears a bandana around his neck and leans on the back of the seated man's chair. A faintly patterned wallpaper is the backdrop for these subjects.

Handwritten in ink on inside of paper cover: The one on the left represents a wayward youth who is in care of his kind and generous Guardian. Who you will observe is on the right. By paying particular attention to the changes of his countainaince [sic] and the manner in which he sits. You will undoubtedly come to the conclusion, that he is the man with a broken heart, or the last of his race.
