Notes	Content derived from inventory prepared by Dana EchoHawk.; From inventory: "José Rafael Chacón (known as Rafael Chacon) born April 22, 1833 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. When 12 years old, he attended the military academy in Mexico and by 1855, Rafael was a sergeant in Col. Ceran St. Vrain's Battalion. He fought at the battle of Valverde in February 1862. He was with Kit Carson in the transfer of Indians from Navajo country and was commander of Fort Stanton. He 0was discharged from the army as a major. Rafael married Juana María Paiz on April 15, 1858 in Peñasco, New Mexico. In November 1870, after being discharged from the army, they came to Las Animas County to the home of Juana's father Rafael Paiz. in 1871, they moved to a ranch in Sarcillo Canyon, south of Gulnare, Colorado. Rafael served in the senate of the territorial legislature of New Mexico and as clerk of the senate and justice of the peace in Chamisal, New Mexico. He served in other public office position and the hospital in Trinidad was named Mount San Rafael after him.
