Summary	View of the San Luis Institute of the Arts and Crafts, San Luis (Costilla County), Colorado. Shows a modified Territorial design with vigas and stepped pediments. The building has a two story central core with two wings and entrances covered with tile roofs. Students and automobiles are near the building. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are in the distance. Ninety percent of the students are Hispanic American.

Classes began in 1943. 'The new San Luis division called the San Luis Institute of the Arts and Crafts sort of grew up like Topsy. Few Coloradans probably know of its existence. Dr. (Ira) Richardson (Adams State College president) had an old community WPA building given to the state and around this structure he built a college serving a population that is 90 percent Spanish-American...the amazing thing about this unique college is that the building was acquired without cost to the state, built or improved upon partly by the faculty, students and volunteer help.'
