(NYT38) WESTBURY, N.Y. -- March 8, 2006 -- ABANDONED-BABY-CEMETERY -- The Island of Hope section at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, N.Y., holds the bodies of 80 babies mostly abandoned shortly after their birth, left to die. Later, they were incongruously named Hope. They were then given a proper funeral and buried, for the most part, in 10-inch-wide, 30-inch-long coffins in the little island of land they share with other infants and children who died too soon, and the pinwheels and teddy bears, toy cars and Incredible Hulk action figures people have left by their headstones. Soon there will be one more, an infant found Saturday by the side of the road in Hempstead. (John Dunn/The New York Times)
