Marc Piscotty/News Staff Photographer SHOT 03/12/2003 - Three Greater Sandhill Cranes take flight after feeding on barley in an open field Wednesday at Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge. Greater Sandhill Cranes gather at Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge near Alamosa every spring and fall as they migrate between their breeding grounds in the Northern United States and southern Canada and their wintering area at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico. As many as 20,000 cranes take advantage of the nearly 16,000 acres of marsh and wetlands at Monte Vista every year.
