Debbie Hegner, (cq), Primate Keeper, sleeps with Umande in the outdoor exhibit. Umande (Swirling Fog) is a baby Western Lowland Gorilla born February 18, 2006 at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, 4250 Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Road, Colorado Springs, Colo., and the birth mother, also bottle fed and raised in captivity, did not know what to do. Zoo officials quickly decided they would take on the round the clock task of hand raising the baby themselves. The intention is to bring the baby back into the group as soon as possible so all activities are geared to do as a mother gorilla would do at all times. Monday July 3, 2006, Umande is 4 months old and progressing well. He takes a bottle and is learning to stand and take the bottle through a cage door. Eventually, at 5 months he will be able to walk and hopefully be considered for inclusion back with the group by 6 months. (all information from Judy, docent, and Sean, p.r.) (STEVEN R.
