This artist's rendering shows the proposed SCIM spacecraft, which would streak through the Mars atmosphere at 15,000 mph, capturing dust and air and returning it to the Utah desert. SCIM stands for Sample Collection for Investigation of Mars. It is one of 20 or more proposals expected to be submitted to NASA by Aug. 1 in a competition to become the next Mars Scout mission. The winner gets $475 million to build a Mars spacecraft that must launch by Jan. 31, 2012.
