(Denver, Colorado, 2/6/2006) At the American Friends Service Committee offices in Denver, two Colorado women convicted after protesting the torture training at the School of the Americas at Ft. Benning in Georgia held a press conference about the sentences they received and their opposition to U.S. policies regarding torture. A Guatemalan prisoner who alleges he was tortured by not only Guatemalans but also by US citizens and that they were all trained at the School of the Americas. Cheryl Sommers (cq), 68, from Erie, wipes tears from her cheeks after she gave an emotional talk about people she had met who were later tortured and killed in Columbia. She will go to jail for 90 days in California for participating in the SOA protest. To the right is Joanne Cowan (cq), 56, from Boulder, who was also arrested at the same protest (11/20/2005) and will go to jail for 60 days at some point for the same offense.
