Rancher Brett Shawcroft (cq) talks to a Costilla County Sheriff Deputy on Hwy. 160 about ten miles east of Fort Garland on Tuesday June 20,2006. Shawcroft was wanting to move 200 pairs of calfs and cattle from his ranch located south of the highway off Schierl Road (cq). Firefighters were setting backburns to try and control the southern edge of the fire. The fire, named the Mato Vega Fire, was started by lightening on Sunday and has grown to over 9,000 acres. As of Tuesday afternoon the wildfire was in a direct line for 70 homes in the Paradise Acres subdivision. High winds continue to fan the fast growing fire.
