On December 2, 2005 in La Junta, Hanagan brothers Eric and Chuck (l-r) stand on the steps of their cucumber sorting machine designed solely for cucumbers. The machine was on load from Bay Valley Foods and will be returned to the company as Bay Valley closes down. They will lose about 2/3 of their business.Southeastern Colorado has been dealt two big setbacks in recent days. Neoplan said it would close its bus manufacturing plant in Lamar, and Bay Valley Foods in La Junta said it would shut down its pickle plant. About 450 total jobs are lost. It's a dreary holiday season in the region, as workers and econ development officials try to recover.
