A cyclist decends the Horse Thief Trail which drops steeply down to the Green River at the beginning of the White Rim Trail. There are two popular ways to reach the White Rim Trail, Horsethief and Schafer(?) Trails, both are relentlessly steep. The White Rim The trail is actually a four wheel drive road that runs through rough and rugged country for over one hundred miles is in the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah. The nearest town is Moab, Utah. The park is called the Island in the Sky because from the rim, the land drops for over a thousand feet down to a broad bench (the island) and then from the bench it drops down another thousand feet to the Green River, on one side and the Colorado River on the other. Below Island in the Sky the rivers join and flow into notorious Cataract Canyon. Dean Krakel Photo/Rocky Mountain News.
