(NUCLA, Co., SHOT 10/8/2004) Ken Soper, 66, has been head coach of the Dolores County High School Bulldogs for 40 years and has been inducted into the Colorado High School Coaches and National High School Athletic Coaches Halls of Fame as well as being the second all-time winningest coach in Colorado football. Because of a death in his family for which he had to fly back to Oklahoma, Coach Soper missed the whole week of practice and returned Friday morning before their game against the undefeated Nucla Mustangs Friday evening in a key 1A conference matchup. Soper (center) prepares his players for that evening's game as they suit up in Nucla High School's visitors locker room. Soper and his team lost the game that evening 22-18. Soper is an institution in the small southwestern Colorado town having taught and coached multiple generations there. Soper also still coaches baseball and at one time was also the school's basketball coach. The team's quarterback Drew Buffington (#6) waits for his teammates to suit up.
