DENVER (October 21, 2004) - Kidney transplant patient Bob Hickey, 58, of Edwards, CO., greets his kidney donor, Robert Smitty, 32, of Chattanooga, TN (in wheelchair), for the first time since yesterday's historic transplant surgery. The two men, patients at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver, were the first patient/donor matched through a commercial website. The hospital, a leading organ transplant center, has been at the center of an ethical discussion regarding organ procurements from commercial organizations. Said Smitty, "I thought this was a dream I'd never see. There's been so much interest, I hope it helps the (donor) wait list go down." Hickey, after grasping Smitty's hand, added "They've taken really good care of me; these folks have gone above and beyond." PHOTO COURTESY OF PRESBYTERIAN/ST. LUKE'S MEDICAL CENTER
