(3/8/05, Denver, CO) Andy Kerr, a middle school teacher from Jefferson County who lives in Lakewood, (303.984.7983) holds his son Braden (cq) Kerr, 18 months, while he and Mike Bloom, the president and CEO of Sunrise Community Health Center in Greeley (and they offer services in Loveland ), listen to Speaker Andrew Romanoff. Several community members from across the state will speak in support of fixing Colorado's ailing budget in a press conference today at noon in the third floor press room (Rm 326). Some of the speakers include a former police chief from Fountain who says budget cuts were put before the safety of his police officers; Thompson Valley High School students who worry they may not be able to afford college in five years; a middle school teacher who doesn't have enough textbooks for his students; and the CEO of Sunrise Community Center in Greeley who had to prioritize care for patients after cutting $800,000 in Medicaid money from the center's budget. These people are just a few of the many faces of Colorado's budget crisis. The Colorado Economic Recovery Act (HB 1194) will be up for second reading on the House Floor this week. This long-term solution to Colorado's budget problem provides tax relief and a stronger future for Colorado's families. (PHOTO BY JUDY WALGREN, ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
