11/18/04 file photo Deputy George Gatchis was almost home from his graveyard shift at the Denver jail when he saw a pillar of black smoke rising from a subdivision a few miles from his Aurora home. He followed the smoke and found a frantic scene, a young woman evacuating children from a house being swallowed in flames. He dived in, only to be turned back by choking smoke. He went in a second time and desperately called "Where? Where?" as the woman tried to direct him to the 3-month old baby in the home. No good. He didn't reach the child and was sickened to learn the infant had died. Gatchis was treated for smoke inhalation. (SPECIAL TO THE NEWS)
