Nico Lujan (cq), 15, a sophmore at Denver School of Science and Technology, a DPS charter high school, plays a congo drum to ask students and faculty to gather in a cirle in the commons room for the the start of the day. Open just one year, it ranked number one in district CSAP math scores and second in reading after Denver School of the Arts. Every year a new grade will be added so there are just freshmen and sophomores there now, about 235 students. The school day begins with a morning meeting of all students at 8:20. They all stand in a circle in the commons room, when student and faculty can make announcements, perform for the group, and start the day together. Any student who arrives late must apologize to the whole group. (ELLEN JASKOL/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) ***Nico Lujan (cq)
