Hurricane Katrina evacuee Mack Murphy (cq, center), 58, of New Orleans waves thanks to the volunteers in the clothes room in the dorms after picking up a couple of t-shirts Wednesday evening. About 250 Hurricane Katrina evacuees are being housed temporarily in a set of dorms on the old Lowry Air Force Base as a result of the efforts of numerous community groups and the Governor's office. An around the clock effort got the neglected dorms into livable shape in time to host the families and individuals with nowhere to call home in the wake of the storm and flooding that destroyed New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast area. Murphy said he's been at the shelter since Sunday and praised the efforts of the volunteers at the dorms. (MARC PISCOTTY/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) CQ Mack Murphy
