Glenwood Sprgs., Colo. 7/5/04 -- A memorial for the 14 firefighters who lost their lives 10 years ago will be held on the anniversary of their deaths on 7/6. It is now a text book lesson for those learning what to do and what not to do in wildland fires. For the first time,Don Mackey's children Leslie Ann, 15 and Bob, 14 came to see the spot where their father died. "I thought it would be easier to wait but it's not, I'm still emotional." She wept as she stood by his marker. It was the lowest one on the hill. Don's sister Susan Mackey holds her daughter Jessica Jones, 20, under the poncho with her. As they went up the 2 mile steep climb, Susan reminded Leslie and Bob to imagine what it was like on that hill with a heavy pack and fire/smoke racing up the hill. The family planned to spend the night camping on the hill. RMN photo by Linda McConnell. 7/5/2004
