Esther Smith, program director at Tooley Hall, walks down a hallway on August 18, 2005, in the 60-bed community corrections center for women--or a halfway house, past a poster created by one of the residents, with inspirational messages added by the other residents. At Tooley Hall, women are given help with the transition from their time in prison to a functional life in the community. Lisl Auman is expected to stay here when she is released from prison. She was originally sentenced to life in prison without a chance of parole for her involvement in a burglary in 1997 that led to the death of a policeman. The sentence was overturned in March, 2005 due to an error in the jury instructions. (ELLEN JASKOL/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) ***
