(l) Bill Leone (cq), the U.S. District Attorney for the District of Colorado shakes hands with Al LaCabe (cq) (r), the Manager of Safety, after a press conference held August 29, 2005 in the conference room of the Denver Police Department. The FBI, Denver police, and other area law enforcement agencies rounded up 31 members of the GKI gang on drug charges (crack cocaine) all over the Denver metro area on August 29, 2005. There are four more men at large. The police say the bust could cripple the gang, which law enforcement has called the most violent and volatile in the city. A federal grand jury in Denver has indicted 22 members or associates of the GKI (Gallants Knights Insane) gang, which operates in the Denver metro area, on charges of crack cocaine distribution. An additional 13 defendants have been charged by Criminal Complaint, and 15 defendants face state charges. Of those charged federally, 24 have been arrested by federal, state, and local law enforcement. There were also 55 search warrants of residences and vehicles in Denver, Lakewood, Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Littleton, Englewood, Northglen, Brighton, Westminster and Aurora that yielded various quantities of drugs, cash and weapons. The arrests and searches end a two year criminal investigation. (JUDY DEHAAS/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) Bill Leone (Police PIO), Al LaCabe (cq)
