Vail, Colo.shot on 2/25/05--At Vail Resort 'Vail Veteran Ski Weekend' offered some 19 disabled veterans a chance to ski. Marine Corporal Chris Fesmire,(cq)26, right, takes a run on his mono ski with the help of instructor Dave Callahan (cq) who works for Vail. He takes this turn a little too wide, but is helped by Dave. Chris lost both his leg when his humvee ran over a mine in Qaim,Iraq. "Learning to walk again is long and hard." He sees paralles in skiing and walking and now learning to play the mandolin. "I am learning all these new things. The challenge is to find the joy in the simple things." Cheryl Jensen is the organizer of the event. This is her second event. She wanted to do something for the veterans and last year she organized Vail Resort and hotels to donate in kind to give veterans who have given so much. She was only going to do it for one year but when one of the vets said to her 'in three days you've changed my life' she knew she would have to do it again. "There are so many amputees that come back. I just thought we could do something" Jensen said. (photo by Staff Photographer Linda McConnell/Rocky Mountain News)
