(BORMIO, Italy - Shot 2/9/2005) The Men's Giant Slalom of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships was set to be run on the Pista Stelvio course in Bormio, Italy on Wednesday but was cancelled half an hour before the race because Italian television decided to strike. The race is tentatively rescheduled for tomorrow but much is up in the air at this point. U.S. ski team men's head coach Phil McNichol said, "skiing can't afford this (a cancelled race)", especially considering its waning popularity in a number of markets and virtual obscurity in America. McNichol was talking on his cell phone at the base of the ski area after learning of the cancellation. (Photo by MARC PISCOTTY / ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
