Vivian Stovall suffered a spinal injury on the job in 1994 and was referred to a physician by worker's compensation law, claims that her condition was never adequately addressed. Stovall's condition worsened, had surgery in 1998, still takes pain medication, and is on permanent disability. Stovall believes that, with more choices for a physician, she could have had better care and might not have aggravated her injury over those four years. At the podium is Colorado Rep. Morgan Carroll (D), co-author of House Bill 05-1018, which addresses physician choice. Colorado Rep. Morgan Carroll (D) and Sen. Stephanie Takis (D) introduce House Bill 05-1018 at a press conference in the State Capitol in Denver, Colo., on Thursday, January 27, 2005. The bill is designed to change worker compensation law such that a claimant would be allowed to choose a medical provider, rather than the current method, where the insurer or employer assigns care.
