(BORMIO, Italy - Shot 2/9/2005) Competitors and coaches inspect the course early Wednesday morning before learning of its cancellation. The Men's Giant Slalom of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships was set to be run on the Pista Stelvio course in Bormio, Italy on Wednesday but was cancelled half an hour before the race because Italian television decided to strike. The race is tentatively rescheduled for tomorrow but much is up in the air at this point. U.S. ski team head coach Phil McNichol said, "skiing can't afford this (a cancelled race)", especially considering its waning popularity in a number of markets and virtual obscurity in America. There were more than 170 men competing in the Giant Slalom. (Photo by MARC PISCOTTY / ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
