(1/24/05, Pondicherry, India) Today Dave and I visited three villages for Dalits around Pondicherry to get an idea what their lives were like. A dog rests on a narrow road in Pudunagar, a village where only laborers live - whether they work in construction or as fish laborers. The people earn from 25 rupees to 150 rupees a day. The tsunami has greatly reduced work in the area and many people have been out of work since the wave hit - whether they worked on the fishing boats, selling fish, or in construction. Work is scarce and many people are living off of the 50 cents to three dollar wages a day. (Judy Walgren, Rocky Mountain News)
