(1/24/05, Pondicherry, India) Today Dave and I visited three villages for Dalits around Pondicherry to get an idea what their lives were like. 65-year-old Kokila eats breakfast that someone donated to her, which is her lot in life everyday. She has been a widow for the past ten years, has no way to support herself and relies on other people's generosity to stay alive. "What to do?" she said. "We have to live with what we have." Her frail body shook when she coughed. "I get no relief from the government. At least they could give us a bit of food just to live." (Judy Walgren, Rocky Mountain News)
