(1/24/05, Pondicherry, India) Today Dave and I visited three villages for Dalits around Pondicherry to get an idea what their lives were like. Fish Industry laborer Sekar, 37, went to the river with a net and caught a few fish to sell in his village Pudunagar, just outside of Pondicherry. He is a worker in the fishing business, and since no one is fishing in the sea, then he is totally out of work. A widow and a father of three, he earned 38 rupees today selling fish to this woman Venkatama, who bought fresher fish for 30 rupees, and another woman who bought older fish for 8 rupees. He and his children will eat today with this money, less then a dollar. He can get a 2 kgs of rice for 26 rupees and will use the rest for a bit of lentils or some other food to add to the rice. He felt like he got ripped off by these women, but "what can I do?" he lamented. (Judy Walgren, Rocky Mountain News)
