(1/18/05, Singarathoppu , India) Fisherman and laborer Kumaravel, 37, throws a net off the pier in Singarathoppu. He was on the pier fishing when the tsunami came and was taken away by the water. But because he is a fisherman and is such a strong swimmer, he was able to stay on top of the wave and he lived. He said he will be back fishing as soon as the government allows boats back in the water. The Dalit Freedom Network group went south of Pondicherry 45 km to Singarathoppu and set up camp. They worked out of tents in the sweltering heat and humidity seeing almost 700 people. (Judy Walgren, Rocky Mountain News)
