July 18, 1929 - A twelve-car Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific passenger train plunged into Sand Creek, when a bridge collapsed, near Stratton Colo. A cloudburst had sent a torrent of water fifteen feet deep into the normally dry creek bed and weakened the bridge. Ten people died. The train was bound for Denver from Chicago. The photo shows the wreckage of a sleeping car as workers attempted to recover the bodies of those victims trapped inside. Harry Rhoads.
